Totalitarian Governments use the people in a total movement to achieve a goal. When this goal is finally met, the government finds a new goal to strive for to keep the population in check. This type of government sprang up during the 1930ââ¬â¢s in Europe and Asia. Totalitarianism came into being for many reasons: class struggle, nationalism, and a need for a better way of life. However the biggest reason that totalitarian government came into play was because of the Great Depression. Three nations in particular were able to model this take over by using the lower classes as a boost to achieve power. The Russian nation was in a state of distress. The country was being ruined by drought, fire, and the lack of industry. Russia was falling way behind the rest of the world, and with the death of Lenin they were looking for a new leader. The single party system made it easy for a totalitarian style leader to take hold of the reigns of power. Trotsky and Stalin were the two candidates for the take over Russiaââ¬â¢s government. They both used socialism to try to move into power, but Stalin used socialism on the home front to his advantage. Where Trotsky wanted to use the rest of the world for socialism, making the people think that they needed a crutch. This idea did not go over well and Stalin won increasing support. He used this support to banish and kill Trotsky and his opposition. After Trotsky was out of the way, Stalin killed his supporters and furthered his totalitarian role. With the introduction of his ââ¬Å"Five Year Planâ⬠, to increase industry by two hundred and fifty percent and agriculture by one hundred and fifty percent, he solidified his position and the birth of a totalitarian government through the goal of industry. Earlier, in the nation of Italy, totalitarianism had been introduced before the grounds had been laid in Russia. There was a great hate that was rising between the upper and lower classes. The socialist movement was in full effect, and factory workers and peasant were taking over factories. And with the pope lifting the ban on Catholics, there were an increasing number of different opposing factions in government making an already unstable government worse. Mussolini, a nationalist and fascist, steps in asking for a greater sense of nationalism. He helps this idea with promises of better benefits for the working class and land reform for the peasants.

With globalization being the current trend in businesses all over the world, success of international business units depends heavily on the effective performance of the Human Resource department (Edwards & Rees, 2006). Globalization or the international expansion of business involves the integration of an organization`s operations, business processes and strategies into diverse cultures, ideas, products and services. Business operations transverse regional and geographical boundaries, while having to deal with diverse cultures in their area of operation; ranging from customer relation to recruitment of employees (Edwards & Rees, 2006). Transnational businesses have to also strategically deal with their foreign markets which involves understanding concepts of multi-culturalism which can be effectively handled by the Human Resource Management. Most importantly however, is the role of Human Resource Management in cultural sensitivity that will determine the success of a business beyond its borders (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2012). Human Resource planning is essential in the success of any business. HR planning is the strategic process of forecasting future human resource needs of an organization, and ensuring that structures are established to align these needs with the goals that a business envisions to achieve. This process is especially important in the international expansion of businesses, as the success of a business is highly dependent on this management of this resource (employees). This critical practice of HR management will ensure an organization is equipped with accurate information and data on human resource before it ventures into any foreign markets or fields. HR planning will also ensure correct information on projections in terms of employee turn over is available to avoid future surpluses of deficits in the workforce of an organization (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2012). All these information that is gathered through the process of HR Planning is imperative to a business that is deciding to embark on the process of globalization, or operating beyond its geographical or cultural borders. Recruitment and selection are other roles of HRM that are significant in a businessââ¬â¢ decision to venture into international markets and operations. Transnational business translates into incorporation of a larger workforce in the business operations due to the expanded magnitude operations (Ervin & Smith, 2008). This calls for recruitment and selection of new employees to facilitate the expanded scope of operations. The HR practice of recruitment and selection is important in a businessââ¬â¢ decision to venture into international markets. Expansion of a business into international markets requires full knowledge of the culture in the host country/region. Culture and perspective of people in the new markets is imperative to understand, as it would govern the processes of recruitment (Ervin & Smith, 2008). A good example is a nation where people frequently read the dailies and newspapers. This would direct the advertising of recruitment in the dailies. The perspective of people in the host country should also be taken into account to ensure this HR practice is aligned to their culture. Understanding of the host country`s culture and perspective is imperative in conducting a credible and efficient recruitment and selection process. The other equally important HR practice in deciding on international expansion of business is the training and development role in HR. Before a business decides to embark on international markets, it has to consider the possibility of training either newly recruited staff in the new markets, or similarly, training expatriates to work in the new markets (Evans, Doz & Laurent, 1989). There is a high possibility of businesses to fail in newly ventured markets if its operations do not match up to that of its competitors. To maintain competitive advantage in new markets, a business must ensure it offers quality services and products that either match or surpass the standards in the newly ventured markets. This can be maintained through continuous training and developing the organization`s workforce. Training will inculcate the right job attitudes, skills and knowledge that will ensure effective and efficient job performance; an attribute that will enhance a businessââ¬â¢ chance of success in international markets. Performance appraisal is yet another HR practice that plays an important role in determining the viability of a business venturing into international markets. However small the connection may seem between these two factors, the impact of performance appraisal largely determines the consistency of a businessââ¬â¢ performance. Performance appraisal is the structural check against which the performance of an organization`s workforce is weighed and rewarded. Performance appraisal should significantly take into account the working culture of the market it is operating in (Edwards & Rees, 2006). This is important as people from different cultures are motivated by different factors. Some cultures value wage increment as motivational factors whereas others value job promotions and recognition more. Performance appraisal should consider such cultural factors before establishing ways on how to reward employees. An efficient performance appraisal will ensure that employees are constantly working towards exemplary performance, as they know their efforts will be awarded. Performance appraisals that are fair, transparent and in line with employeesââ¬â¢ expectations; will see the rise in productivity of a business` operations. The rewarding system established by an organization is also important in determining the success of a business in foreign markets. Different countries in the world have different rates of inflation and standard remuneration. These factors should be taken into effect as they greatly influence the performance of employees in an organization. Remuneration is a sensitive factor in HRM as extremes on either side may lead to high unhealthy turnover for an organization (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2012). High remunerations that are above average in the country of operation may build employees wealth to limits that make them leave their workplaces, on the contrary, meager salaries may result to turnover as employees seek greener pastures. It is therefore imperative that any organization that wishes to expand into international markets to consider the remuneration average in their countries of operation. Other HR practices that need to be considered before a business ventures into international markets include: management development, quality management, and compliance management (Evans, Doz & Laurent, 1989). The management of an organization venturing into international markets should be ready to streamline its operations to thrive profitably in its market of operation. Most importantly however, the management should adapt a global culture of professionalism that ensures expatriates and employees from the home country work in harmony. The international business should have managers who are focused to ââ¬Ëthink globally, but act locallyâ⬠. This is a sure-way policy that will rocket any international business into success (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2012). Compliance management is the other HRM practice that is equally important in the consideration of venturing into international business. Different countries have different business compliance laws that must be adhered to if a business is to maintain its legal jurisdiction in its area of operation. Laws relating to the quality threshold of production, taxes, employee welfare among others should be taken into effect. It is also important for a business to recognize what operations are deemed legal or illegal in its host country to avoid legal tussles (Evans, Doz & Laurent, 1989). From the above, it is clearly evident that HRM practices play a significant role in determining the globalization of a business. It is therefore essential that before businesses embark onto international businesses, they should take into account global factors that will ensure its ascent to success. Coagulation and Flocculation Essay
1.0 Introduction In this lab, we are conducting two experiments on natural surface water. The first experiment is to conduct jar tests to estimate an optimum dosage of iron salt to remove suspended solids. The seconds experiment is to observe the rate of floc formation nad sedimentation. 2.0 Background Coagulation and Flocculation: Coagulation and flocculation are important part in water and wastewater treatment. Coagulation is the destabilization of particulate matter by physical or chemical processes. Flocculation is the formation of larger particles that will settle out of the solution. They are usually the first form of treatment of water and wastewater to remove suspended matter or color. Jar tests are used as a control test for plant operations. Aluminum or iron salts can be used to for coagulation of particles and to form flocs that can settle out. Coagulation and flocculation tests provide the optimum dosages to remove turbidity and color, along with secondary effects such as adjusting pH. Jar tests also provide information on the amount of energy needed to provide the coagulation and flocculation treatments, as well as settleability of the flocs, and clarity of the water. They can also be used to study basic processes, for instance, kinetics of reactions and removal of constituents. 3.0 Procedure Determination of Optimum Coagulant Dosage To determine the optimum coagulation dosage, a series of jar tests were conducted. First, 400 mL of clay and sodium bicarbonate amended DI water was measured and poured into a 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask using a graduated cylinder. The initial pH of that sample was then measured and recorded. The predetermined dose of coagulant was poured into a 100mL graduated cylinder and DI water was added to reach a total solution volume of 100 mL. A stir bar was added to the Erlenmeyer flask along with the coagulant dose. The flask was then placed on a magnetic stir plate was rapidly mixed for one minute. After a minute of rapid mixing, the speed was reduced to low and the solution underwent slow mixing for ten minutes. The flask was then removed from the magnetic plate and was allowed to settle. Samples were extracted from the top of the flask after five, ten, and fifteen minutes had elapsed using a 10 mL sampling syringe. Special care was taken to not disturb the sediment while sampling. The sample was transferred from the syringe to a vile, shaken, and placed in a Turbidimeter to determine the turbidity. The turbidity was recorded and the vile was emptied and rinsed between each sample. After fifteen minutes had elapsed and the last turbidity reading had been recorded, the pH of the sample was measured and recorded. The sample was then dumped into a specified waste container, the flask was rinsed with tap water and DI water, and the entire experiment was repeated using a new specified coagulant dose. 4.0 Results and Discussion After plotting turbidity against dosage from our results, we found that the optimum dosage of coagulant to be 1000 mg/L Fe2O3 as shown in Figure 1. Also, longer settling times produced lower levels of turbidity, with 15 minutes being most successful. Optimum pH for a coagulant is determined empirically from laboratory testing by keeping dosage constant and testing a pH range for optimal coagulation. Generally after adding Fe2O3, final pH decreased. Although we did not perform this in the lab, our samples had best success with a pH around 6.5 as seen in Table 1. Mixing speed is also important in coagulation and flocculation. Initially ââ¬Å"flash mixingâ⬠is used, where high mixing speeds disperse the coagulant evenly throughout the container. Later, slower mixing speeds are used to promote particle collisions, which lead to larger floc formations. The lab is performed this way because higher speeds will help disperse the coagulant but will break up the flocs that form. By reducing the speed to slow after one minute, it allows for an even dispersion but also the formation of flocs.

They both wrote stories on life journeys, however; Twain used pre-adolescent characters to show how an individual should behave in society. Samuelââ¬â¢s father, John, was a judge. When little Samuel was four years of age he moved to Hannibal with his family. His parents enrolled him in a private school there. Samuel had many health problems as a child. Therefore, they had to keep him indoors for the first half of his childhood. Although, when he was around ten years he joined the rest of the townââ¬â¢s children outside. He grew up in a two-story house at 206 Hill Street. One of SamuelA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s major life events was when his father died of pneumonia. Because of his fatherA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s death, Samuel left school and became a printerA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s apprentice. Samuel found his first love of writing after two years as a printerA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s apprentice. He became an editorial assistant with his older brother and really found writing fascinating. When Samuel Clemens tuned 17 years old he left Hannibal. He found a printerA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s job in St. Louis. There, Clemens became a river pilot assistant and got his license in 1858. This was a very important time for Samuel because itA?à aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s where he got his writerA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s name, Mark Twain. In piloting the expression ââ¬Å"Mark Twainâ⬠means that is safe to navigate. Many authors use other names when they write books and Samuel decided on Mark Twain because of his piloting experiences. Later in his life, Mark Twain began working as a newspaper reporter for several newspapers all over the United States. Mark Twain married Olivia Langdon in 1870. Together, they had four children. Unfortunately, one died as an infant and the others died in their 20A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s. Clara was their only child who lived a long life. She lived to be 88 years old and had one daughter. Mark TwainA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s first successful writing was ââ¬Å"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County. â⬠It gave him a lot of fame and the critics really liked it. Twainââ¬â¢s first book was ââ¬Å"The Innocents Abroad,A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬A? and was published in 1869. The arch of his fame was probably when he wrote ââ¬Å"The Adventures of Tom Sawyerâ⬠in 1876 and A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬Aââ¬Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬A? in 1885. He has a long list of stories, books, and newspaper article. He wrote 28 well know ones in all. Mark Twain passed away on April 21, 1910. He leaves a big legacy of childhood stories and many people still read his books. He is a very respectable American author and his books are brilliant. Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24th, 1896. His father was Edward Fitzgerald. He grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. As a child he was brought up as a devote Catholic. The first School he attended was St. Paul Academy. When he graduated he went to Princeton and was part of the class of 1917. ScottA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? s first engagement was to Zelda Sayre. She later broke their engagement. One of his major life events is when he went to St. Paul to write, A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬Aââ¬Å"This Side of Paradise. A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬A? The critics loved this story and got many sales. Another major life event is when Zelda Sayre took him back and they got married. They took a trip to Europe where is wife had their first child. The first time he wrote something he was in a school newspaper club. The first thing that got published was the A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬Aââ¬Å"Romantic Egotist. A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬A? He had immediate success at the age of 24. The subject he wrote on was young love. His style was life journeys of adults. He wrote his journey stories with clarity, with color, and with music. His style changed a little when he started to drink in 1923. His best book got great reviews, but not many sales. The A? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬Aââ¬Å"Great GatsbyA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬A? written in 1924 probably marked his arch of fame and all the critics fell in love with it. When Scott ran out of money he would write short stories. Most of his income came from his short stories because his novels didnA? aââ¬Å¡Ã ¬aââ¬Å¾? t have many sales until after his death. Scott Fitzgerald leaves us a legacy of one of the greatest American authors in history. He was a great man who became friends with another great author, Hemmingway. Both our team and Haroldââ¬â¢s staged a brave fight that led Duke William to honoring Harold with armor. William then released Harold, who returned to England and met King Edward. Harold was then crowned King following the death of King Edward. However, I know the comet that was sighted during Haroldââ¬â¢s coronation was a bad omen, and it meant the throne did not belong to him (Foys, 2009). All of us under the leadership of Duke Williams believe t he throne rightfully belongs to him (William), so we planned to invade the Normans with the help of Bayeuxââ¬â¢s Bishop Odo, who is also the Dukeââ¬â¢s half brother. We loaded our ships with food, drinks and armor, and dressed in battle gear. The Duke led us across the channel, carrying wooden castles and horses on the ships. When we landed in England at Sussex near Hastings, we prepared a feast and Bishop Odo said grace. We burnt a house in the village after the feast to demonstrate our purpose on invasion, then put up a motte and bailey to secure our position at Hastings (Hicks, 2006). I delivered a message of war from the Duke to the Haroldââ¬â¢s camp, and he took up the challenge. I was only a messenger then, so I was not taken hostage by Haroldââ¬â¢s soldiers. Our Duke then gave us a speech preparing us for war against Harold. On the 14th October, we began the long Battle of Hastings. I and my fellow soldiers fought on horseback the whole day, while the English, mos t of whom were Saxons and fought on foot, shielded themselves behind a wall. I saw a lot of blood on the ground, but was encouraged by Bishop Odo who gave encouragement by continuously waving us on with a baton. As a cleric, he is not permitted to shed blood (Bernau & Bildhauer, 2007). He, therefore, could not carry a sword like the rest of us. I soon saw the bodies of two knights, Gyrth and Leofwine, who are also Haroldââ¬â¢s brothers, lying lifeless on the ground. The number of dismembered bodies and horses littering the battlefield grew, and our Duke occasionally raised his helmet to reassure us of his safety by showing his face. I saw both English and Norman army uniforms on the ground, which meant that some of our soldiers were also injured and killed. Our troops finally managed to surround Harold. I saw him lying on the ground with an arrow through his right eye before he was hacked to death using swords. At the sight of their dead king, most of his army fled as we disarmed the ones we had captured. We eventually gained victory at the Battle of Hastings. As we celebrate our victory and explore the English land, I would like you to understand that Duke William deserves to be king because his father, Robert the Magnificent, was also a Duke of Normandy.
